The New Retirement Project

Ideas and tools for better living “Everybody acts out a story in retirement. Usually, we don’t know what that story is and we should know our story, because it might be a tragedy, and we probably don’t want that.” The old story of retirement: Traditionally retirement means your reward for a lifetime of work and parenting. Travel, leisure activities, family and friends and maybe some part-time work to “stay busy”. The goal is to be happy. Something is missing: Sooner or later many people end up feeling that even though things are pretty good, “something is missing”. The “tragedy” is unhappiness and wasted opportunity. Challenges that we face as we retire: Loss of structure Loss of support Loss of identity Pace of change Managing well-being. Questions: Will my money last? What if I get sick? What am I going to do? Frequent complaints: Unhappy, anxious, depressed. A sense that something is missing. Time is ticking. What should I be doing? Being stuck. Relationship stress. Irritable. Argumentative. Complexity The accumulated complexity of these factors causes many people to feel overwhelmed and vulnerable. Negative emotions, such as depression, spoil the quality of life. The good news is that there is nothing wrong with you. These are normal healthy reactions to the fact that you life problems to navigate.  The root problem for today’s retiree is how to manage the new level of complexity easily and simply. New Retirement is about re-framing the meaning of retirement. The old orientation was to seek pleasure. The new orientation is to seek meaning and purpose and adventure.  Your first task can be to reinvent your identity and then fill that container with the things that will bring you the life you want. Imagine….You are the scriptwriter, director, and the star of your life story.

The Coaching Process

Two options:   1. Individual process via Skype or phone. The one to one approach offers the advantage of customizing the process to your personal situation and needs. We can go deeper faster. 2. Group process is an option for clients on the Sunshine Coast, B.C. The group process offers the learning advantage and the inspiration of seeing different personality types in action. The key advantage for both approaches is the coaching conversations to apply the tool kit and week to week structure that supports your transformation. Possibilities: Know who you are. Aim for creating the highest good you can imagine. Let your noble aim be the antidote to the chaos and suffering. Develop a deep understanding of who you are and why you are here. Liberate yourself from the clutches of your reactive personality. Make use of all of your intelligences: head, heart and gut. Live in alignment with your true nature. Write a vision for your ideal future. Purposefully manage the key factors that affect your emotional wellbeing. Being more productive than ever. Have more peak experiences than ever before. The best is yet to come.

Four Steps:

1. Wellbeing Assessment and Goal Setting:  Take stock of your Wellbeing in relation to the top ten factors for wellbeing. You assess where you are, where you are headed and where you want to go. Good things happen right away. 2. Cultivating Peak Experiences: Focus your intention and attention on having more peak experiences. “The best is yet to come” is a real possibility. We identify past peak experiences and notice new peak experiences to create a compounding effect. 3. Self Understanding:  Deepen your self-understanding with the  Enneagram personality system. Learn the distinctions of your personality Type compared to 8 others in the model. Clarify your gifts so that you can grow them to fit your new life. Learn to identify your reactive triggers and blind spots, (everyone has them) so that you can manage them and reduce your stress and suffering. Learn to see where you go under stress and where you go when you are stress-free. Align with your deepest and truest nature. 4. Author Your Future: Create a written vision and your ideal future. One that includes your “noble aim”. Most people fall into retired life. You will have a clear written vision and where you want to go and how you are going to get there. As a result, you will fill your life with more meaning and purpose and have a  greater success rate in reaching your goals. Coaching Partnership: Integrating new ideas into one’s life is hard to do alone. Who are you going to talk to about these things?  Having a personal coach and mentor who is experienced in the process will help you to talk your way through the process in the most efficient and effective way to ensure that you accomplish what you want.   Free coaching conversation: I invite you to take advantage of our offer for a free exploratory conversation about your situation and how the process may fit your needs.
